Bloomington is a city in central Illinois, United States, that serves as the seat of McLean County (1830). It is roughly midway between Chicago and St. Louis, Missouri, and is near to Normal (north). The land was first occupied in 1822 and was called as Keg Grove, then Blooming Grove, due to the abundance of wildflowers in the region. Bloomington was called when the town was set out in 1831. A plaque marks the spot where Abraham Lincoln made his famous "lost speech" against slavery during a convention to create the Republican Party in Illinois in 1856 at Major's Hall in Bloomington. The city is located in a fertile agricultural area, and its economy is mostly focused on farming (primarily maize and soybeans), cattle keeping, and the production of farm seeds; insurance, confectionery, and vacuum cleaner manufacturing are also significant.
Before the arrival of the first European settlers in the early 1820s, the Bloomington region was located on the edge of a huge grove populated by the Kickapoo people. Originally known as Blooming Grove, the hamlet of Keg Grove became the county seat of newly formed McLean County on December 25, 1830.
A county seat was formed when the McLean County was incorporated. The Act, however, indicated that Bloomington's location "would be located later." One of the county's boosters, James Allin, volunteered to contribute 60 acres (240,000 m2) of his property to the new town. Bloomington was laid out after he accepted his offer. On the 4th of July 1831, its lots were auctioned in a raucous auction. There were few highways at the time, but fertile soils attracted new farmers, who set up shop in the newly constituted county.
A patrol officer noticed a fire at a laundry across from the old municipal hall and police station in 1900. He raised the alarm, but the fire ravaged the city, particularly north and east of the courthouse. Repaired by local architects George Miller and Paul O. Moratz, the charred portion was rapidly rebuilt.
Bloomington, IL grew steadily over the first two decades of the twentieth century. Agriculture, highway and railroad building, and the expansion of the insurance industry (primarily State Farm Insurance) all affected Bloomington's growth and downtown area. The downtown area grew into a regional retail destination, drawing visitors from neighboring counties. The power of labor unions expanded.

In 1997, Judy Markowitz became New York City's first Jewish and female mayor when she was elected to the post. Downtown Bloomington got a new arena, and the city's performing arts facility started being restored during Markowitz's two tenure as mayor. Bloomington would also approve a gay rights ordinance in 2002. In 2021, Mboka Mwilambwe became the first black mayor of the city.
As the state's fastest-growing metropolitan region, Bloomington-McLean County is home to both cities. There has been a 28% increase in the area's population between 1990 and 2006. When the U.S. Census Bureau performed a special count of Bloomington in February 2006, it showed a population of 74,975, an increase of 15.7% in less than six years. This was the city with the fastest growth.
In the city, 27.3 percent were under the age of 20, 9.0 percent were 18-24, 29.8 percent were 25-44, 23.8 percent were 45-64, and 10.2 percent were 65 or over. 33 was the median age. 95.4 men for every 100 females.
Families in the city made an average of $81,166, with a median family income of $58,662. The median income for men was $56,597, while the median income for women was $39,190. The city's average annual income was $32,672. 5.7 percent of households and 11.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.6 percent of those under the age of 18 and 6.3 percent of those over the age of 65, respectively.
A previous home of the Central Hockey League's PrairieThunder and Blaze, the Grossinger Motors Arena (originally the U.S. Cellular Coliseum) opened in 2006 in southwest Downtown Bloomington. There are also games by Illinois State University's club hockey team and youth hockey programs held there. For exceptional occasions, the Coliseum can accommodate up to 8,000 people in its 180,000 square foot (17,000 m2) of area. Intimate seating for 2,500-5,000 people is possible with the facility's movable curtain. In addition to concerts and family activities, the Coliseum has held racing events and trade exhibits.
The Ladies' Library Association founded Bloomington Public Library in 1857. It was mostly funded through book contributions and membership fees. 1871: 105 West North Street (which is now West Monroe Street.) After closure owing to lack of funding in 1880, locals gathered $1,100 to revive it. In 1888, the library relocated to a new two-story structure on property provided by Mrs. Sarah B. Withers. The library was christened "Withers Library." in his honor.
Citizens for a New Public Library establishes a Friends of the Library organization in 1976 in order to generate funds for a new public library via bond issues. This campaign began in 1977. The effort was a success, and the library reopened as "Bloomington Public Library." in 1977 at its present location at 205 East Olive Street. Public services offered by the library include a Bookmobile that distributes to nearby areas and was initially introduced in 1926 as the Library on Wheels.

Many animals and zookeepers can be seen at Miller Park Zoo. Zoo inhabitants include a Sumatran tiger, river otter, Galapagos tortoise, Amur leopard, sun bears, reindeer, sea lion, red pandas, lemus, bald eagles, pallas cats and red wolves. The zoo has a lot of different things to see, like Wallaby WalkAbout, ZooLab, the Children's Zoo, Animals of Asia, and the Katthoefer Animal Building. New to the Zoo is the Tropical America Rainforest.
At Normal City Hall Annex, the east–west section crosses the north segment and continues east to Towanda-Barnes Road. The Liberty Branch runs from Commerce Drive to the Old Farm Lakes Subdivision, starting at Commerce Drive and ending at Old Farm Lakes Subdivision. From Lincoln Street to Route 9 West, the Freedom Branch runs. Throughout the region, parking is accessible in adjacent lots. Walkers, runners, in-line skaters, skateboarders, cyclists, wheelchair users, and other non-motorized modes of transportation are welcome to utilize the path. It is not cleared of snow during the winter months and is open to skiers weather permitting.
The Genevieve Green Gardens at Ewing Cultural Center were dedicated in 2007 as part of the Illinois State University's 150th anniversary celebration. Architects and landscape designers from all over the world worked together to make the gardens a reality, with help from the late Bruce V. Green, an avid gardener who gave $5.2 million to start the project. The gardens include a new public entry which directs visitors to a formal plaza, the entrance to the manor, grass patio, theater walk with a widened walkway and additional plantings.
The McLean County Cultural Center, which has been serving Central Illinois for almost 130 years, is one of the Midwest's oldest arts institutions. The Holiday Treasurers display and sale, as well as the annual Amateur Competition and Exhibition, which has been showcasing the greatest amateur painters in Central Illinois for over 70 years, are held each year. Metcalf Elm./Jr. School and University High School, both situated on the campus of Illinois State University, are available to Bloomington students.
In 1850, Illinois Wesleyan Institution, a private residential university with 2,100 students and a student/faculty ratio of 12 to 1, was formed. For a long time, it was a part of the Methodist Church. The College of Liberal Arts has 17 academic departments; the College of Fine Arts has professional schools of art, music, and theatre; and the School of Nursing is part of the university. The College of Liberal Arts is divided into three divisions. The five-story Ames Library, the Center for Natural Science, and the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation have all been added in the last decade at Illinois Wesleyan University. Hairmasters Institute of Cosmetology, Inc. teaches pivot point hair sculpture, hair design, long hair design, hair texture, hair color, people skills, and salon management at NCAA Division III Illinois Wesleyan University, which has had more than 100 athletes elected to the Academic All-American team since 1970.
